The Moment Before the Monster

There is a vital space between what we think and what we do.

Viktor Frankl called it the space between stimulus and response. It might only be a few seconds long, but it is one of the most important spaces in a man’s life. Everything hinges there. That brief pause is where choice lives. It is where we either stay sovereign or hand the wheel over to our shadow.

Most of us were never taught to recognize this space, let alone use it. We are taught to push through, power up, or justify our reactions. We are rewarded for action, not reflection. But unchecked reaction has a cost. I often say that when men do not learn to work with this moment, they end up calling in the cleanup crew, the people who have to deal with the fallout. Partners. Kids. Co-workers. Friends. And eventually, ourselves.

Learning to claim even a few seconds of pause can change everything.

Think about The Incredible Hulk.

The Incredible Hulk and David Banner

David Banner begins in a calm, grounded state, Level One. He is human. He is present. Then something happens. A trigger. A threat. A frustration. Anger starts to rise. His body tightens. His breath shortens. His eyes turn green, Level Two. This is the critical moment. He has not become the monster yet. The transformation is not complete. There is still time.

But Level Two is uncomfortable. The energy is intense. The nervous system is lit up. And because we are not taught how to stay there, we rush past it. Banner does not pause. He does not breathe. He does not step back. He pushes through into Level Three, full transformation, and Level Four, destruction.

Here is the hard truth. Sometimes the Hulk is right. Sometimes he is fighting a real injustice. Sometimes he is protecting something he cares about. But even when the cause is valid, the outcome is always the same. Collateral damage. People get hurt. Buildings fall. Relationships are destroyed. And when the dust settles, Banner is alone, ashamed, and left to clean up the mess.

This is the story of so many men.

We are often right in our thinking, but wrong in our reaction. We feel disrespected. Unheard. Overwhelmed. Afraid. Our body reacts before our mind catches up. Our voice rises. Our words sharpen. Our actions speed up. And suddenly, we have crossed a line we swore we would not cross again.

Level Two is the moment of choice.

It is the instant you feel your own eyes turn green. The tightening in your chest. The heat in your face. The surge in your gut. This is not the time for speeches or solutions. This is the time for a pause. A single breath. A step back. That breath is not weakness; it is a tool. It buys you time. It creates space. It keeps you human.

When you pause, you give yourself the chance to name what you are feeling instead of acting it out. Anger. Fear. Shame. Hurt. When a feeling is named, it loses some of its grip. When it is acted out unconsciously, it runs the show.

This is the work of Reclaiming Your King.

A king does not eliminate his anger. He masters it. He does not pretend the monster is not there; he stands guard at the gate. He knows that true power is not found in force, but in restraint. In awareness. In choice.

By catching ourselves early, we do not just protect the people around us; we protect ourselves. We stop living in apology mode. We stop rebuilding what we keep burning down. We break the cycle of reaction, regret, and isolation.

This is how we stay human.

This is how we lead with strength instead of damage.

And this is how, one breath at a time, we reclaim control of our lives, not after the monster is unleashed, but in the moment just before.
