The Importance of Core Values in Reclaiming Your King

Do You Actually Know Your Core Values—or Just the Ones You Wish You Had?

If someone asked you to name your five core values, could you rattle them off as easily as your birthday or phone number? Or would it feel more like trying to remember your old high school locker combination—familiar, but buried somewhere in the dusty corners of your mind? When I ask people to name their core values, I often watch their eyes drift upward, heads tilt, or chins get scratched as they stall for time. Eventually, words like integrity, loyalty, respect, and responsibility emerge. They’re powerful values—but here’s the catch: most of the time, they don’t actually reflect who the person truly is. They reflect who they want to be.

That’s the hidden challenge of identifying core values. We tend to list the aspirational ones—the polished, ideal versions of ourselves—rather than the values we consistently live by. Saying “integrity” is easy; embodying it in the messy, complicated moments of real life is where the truth shows up. The difference between having clearly defined core values and winging it is like traveling through unknown lands with or without a map. When we actually know our values—and align our choices, behaviors, and relationships with them—we gain direction, clarity, and an internal compass that keeps us on course. Living your true core values doesn’t just describe who you are; it shapes who you’re becoming.
